Endodontic treatment
Endodontic treatment involves repairing damage to the inside of the tooth, known as the tooth’s pulp. Dental pulp can be damaged due to inflammation or infection from severe decay or the tooth becoming cracked.
The most common procedure performed by endodontists is a root canal, which involves removing the damaged pulp from the tooth and filling the tooth back up with a rubber material known as gutta-percha. The tooth is then sealed and usually fitted with a dental crown to protect the vulnerable tooth from becoming damaged.
Here are some signs that you might need to see an endodontist:
- Pain: You have persistent tooth pain, especially when chewing or biting. The pain might start as something that only occurs when the affected tooth is touched, but it comes on more regularly over time.
- Sensitivity: You have increased sensitivity to hot, cold, and sweet foods and beverages.
- Swelling: You have swollen gums or drainage of gums around the tooth.
- Discoloration: You have abnormal discoloration of a specific tooth.
- Damage: Your tooth appears significantly chipped, broken, cracked, decayed, or discolored.
- Trauma: You have blunt trauma to the face or mouth.
